Top Speakers Come to Mobile for the 2010 GMAC Bowl Events
Mobile, Ala.- Charles Barkley, Gene Stallings will be in Mobile to speak at this year’s bowl week events sponsored by the GMAC Bowl.
The Cellular South FCA breakfast will have former Alabama head football coach Gene Stallings as a guest speaker on Monday, January 4, 2010, at 7:00 am in The Mobile Convention Center’s Grand Ballroom. Tickets are $15 for FCA members, and $20 for non-members.
Gene Stallings is a Paris, Texas native. His Alma Mater is Texas A&M under coach Bear Bryant. He later served as the Aggies head football coach for seven years.
Stallings later joined Tom Landry and the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff. During his time there they won several division titles, as well as the 1978 Super Bowl. He then became the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, and the team moved to Phoenix in 1988. Coach Stallings remained there for four years.
On January 11, 1990 he was hired as the University of Alabama’s head football coach. In his third season, Stallings lead the Crimson Tide to a perfect season of 12-0. That undefeated team beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl and went on to capture the National Championship.
Coach Stallings was elected to the Texas A&M Hall of Fame, the Texas Hall of Fame, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and has been honored with awards such as the Dallas Father of the Year Award and the National Boys Club Alumni of the Year Award. The Tuscaloosa Association of Retarded Citizens honored the Stallings Family as the Family of the Year for the sponsorship of their annual charity golf tournament.
Coach Stallings and his family now live in Paris, Texas. Charles Barkley, an 11-time NBA All-Star will speak at the GMAC Financial Services Mayor’s Luncheon on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at 12:00 pm at the Mobile Convention Center. Tickets are $30.
Charles Barkley is from Leeds, Alabama. He attended Auburn University where he played basketball.
He entered the NBA in 1984, being drafted by the 76ers. He remained with them for eight years before being traded to the Phoenix Suns.
He helped the Suns become a powerhouse in the NBA West. He was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 92-93. He was later traded to the Houston Rockets, where he concluded his career after his sixteenth season.
Barkley was also a part of a two-time Olympic gold medal team known as the Dream Team.
In addition to the national talk-show circuit, Barkley is currently a leading in-studio analyst for “NBA on TNT” broadcasts for Turner Sports.
