Prior to Alabama, Burns spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson. He was a major factor in producing six of the top 10 offenses in Clemson history. As running backs coach, he tutored star players such as James Davis, C.J. Spiller, and Reggie Meriwether to name a few. Burns also coached at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans where he helped lead the team to two state championships in 1978-1979 and six district titles.

Burns played fullback at Nebraska under head coach Tom Osborne from 1971-1975. The Cornhuskers claimed Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Sugar Bowl victories during that time. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska in 1976.
