Hoar Program Management and GoDaddy Bowl Honor Reading Contest Winners

Mobile, Ala. (Dec. 4, 2014) – The award ceremony for the 14th annual HOAR Program Management/GoDaddy Bowl Reading and Writing Program, which is meant to stimulate students’ reading and writing skills, took place Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Mobile Civic Center Theater.

The seven-week contest, which ended in October, was open to all fifth grade students in the state of Alabama, as well as the Gulf Coast regions of Florida and Mississippi.

Over 2,000 fourth grade students attended this year’s awards ceremony. Other special guests in attendance included Mayor Sandy Stimpson, Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Martha Peak, Commander Alan Lapenna and Senior Chief Eric Biehn of the United Stated Coast Guard.

The 10 finalists who entered the contest were sent Clare Vanderpool’s book, Moon Over Manifest, to read and write a report to determine the winning place order. The winners were awarded Alabama College Counts 529 funds ranging from $500 to $5,000. They are also invited to attend the events taking place during GoDaddy Bowl Week, including the GoDaddy Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon, the Greers-AL.com Mardi Gras Parade and the GoDaddy Bowl game.

Over the past 13 years, the HOAR Program Management/GoDaddy Bowl Reading and Writing Program has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarship money to local students.

This 16th annual GoDaddy Bowl will be played on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at Ladd-Pebbles Stadium and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
