89th Annual Mobile County Spelling Bee “Extravaganza”
Mobile, Ala. (Jan. 29, 2016) – The 89th Annual Mobile County Spelling Bee presented by New Horizons Credit Union and the GoDaddy Bowl was held Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at the Baker High School Auditorium. Elementary and middle school students from public, private, and parochial schools competed in the contest.
Peyton Maples from St. Paul’s Episcopal School spelled “extravaganza” to claim the title of this year’s spelling bee. Anne Morgan Swearingen from Cottage Hill Christian Academy placed second, and Marlan Zha from O’Rourke Elementary placed third.
Maples will advance to the state spelling bee on March 12, 2016. Adventure Travel, the state spelling bee sponsor, will award the winner an all-expenses-paid trip for two to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Washington, D.C. area in May.
New Horizons Credit Union and the GoDaddy Bowl provided gifts and lunch for all the participants, and cash prizes were awarded to the first, second and third place winners.
