Steve Spurrier To Speak at Dollar General Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon

Mobile, Ala.- (Nov. 13, 2016) Bowl officials announced today that former University of South Carolina head football coach, Steve Spurrier, will speak at the Dollar General Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016 at noon at the Mobile Convention Center.

Spurrier compiled a 228-89-2 (.718) won-loss record in 25-plus seasons as a major college head coach and was awarded nine conference Coach of the Year awards throughout his career.

In 2004, Spurrier became the 32nd head coach at South Carolina, where he compiled an 86-49 record (.637). He became the fourth coach to record 100 or more wins as an SEC coach against SEC competition, ranking second behind Bear Bryant.

The gamecocks saw tremendous success during Spurrier’s tenure, including the school’s first ever SEC Eastern Division title and appearance in the SEC Championship game in 2010. His team went on to have 3 consecutive 11-win seasons, and four consecutive bowl game victories.

Prior to South Carolina, he was the head coach of the Washington Redskins and before that spent 12 seasons as the head coach at the University of Florida. During his time with the Gators, Spurrier’s teams won six Southeastern Conference championships, one national title and finished ranked in the nation’s top 10 nine times. His record at Florida was an amazing 122-27-1 (.817).

Spurrier, who won the 1966 Heisman Trophy as a quarterback for the Gators, played a decade in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers. Spurrier returned to the University of Florida this year as an ambassador and consultant to the athletic department. In September, his name was added to the Gators’ home field, changing its official name to Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
