Dollar General Bowl Honored 25 Local Students At Community Awards Banquet
Mobile, Ala. (Nov. 16, 2017) – The Dollar General Bowl Community Awards Banquet honoring this year’s art contest winners and scholarship recipients was held last night, Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017 at the Mobile Marriott.
The Dollar General Scholarships, presented by Crystal Ghassemi of Dollar General, and Regions Bank Scholarships, presented by Tommy Ankerson of Regions Bank, are awarded annually through the Dollar General Bowl and C Spire 1st & 10 Club Student of the Month Program. Students of the Month and scholarship recipients are selected based on their leadership, integrity, concern for others and community service.

Team Focus presented the Gus Shopoff Memorial Scholarship and the John Gottfried Memorial Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded annually to Team Focus members based on academic merit, excellence in leadership, and involvement in the Team Focus program.

Three additional Team Focus members from different chapters were awarded the John Gottfried Memorial Scholarship as well, but were not in attendance last night: Jamarcus Byrden (Jacksonville, FL), Cameron Smith (Ohio) and Adrian Alvarez (Las Vegas).
The Dollar General Bowl Art Contest invites students from Mobile and Baldwin County schools to enter this annual contest for a chance to earn their school’s art program a cash prize. This year’s theme was “Music in Mobile,” and the contest received over 200 entries. Finalists were selected by judges from the Eastern Shore Art Center and the Mobile Museum of Art.
Since 2007, winning artwork has been chosen for the front cover of the Dollar General Bowl Program and that honor this year goes to Margaret Zheng from St. Paul’s Episcopal School. The Dollar General Bowl has awarded over $25,000 to local schools art programs since the contest’s inception.
6th – 8th Grade:

In addition, the art programs for the winning schools received the following: Theodore High School – $1,100, Dunbar Magnet School – $300, Burns Middle School – $200, Bay Minette Middle School – $100, and St. Paul’s Episcopal School – $100.
The 19th annual Dollar General Bowl will kick off at 6 pm on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017. Top teams from the Mid-American Conference and Sun Belt Conference will square off at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
