C Spire 1st & 10 Club Ready To Kick Off Season
Mobile, Ala. (Aug. 7, 2018) – ESPN College GameDay analyst Desmond Howard will kick off the 2018 C Spire 1st & 10 Club on Monday, Aug. 13 at the Mobile Marriott beginning at 5:30 pm.
Howard, the 1991 Heisman Trophy winner and Super Bowl XXXI MVP joined ESPN in 2005 as a college football analyst for College GameDay.
Prior to joining ESPN, Howard began his broadcast career in 2003 at Fox Sports on the Best Damn Sports Show Period. He was also was a weekly contributor to FoxSports Radio for the 2005-06 NFL season and during the 2007-08 college football season, he was on Miami’s 790 The Ticket.
Howard spent 11 seasons in the NFL after being selected as the fourth overall pick by the Washington Redskins in the 1992 draft. He spent three years with Washington, and then moved on to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2000 while playing with the Lions.
Howard had 92 receptions as a wide receiver in his first four years of the NFL. His 870 punt return yards in a single season remain a NFL record. In 1996, Howard led the NFL in punt returns, punt return average and punt returns for touchdowns, and he tacked on 460 kickoff return yards and 95 receiving yards on 13 catches. In 1997, he became the first and only player on special teams to be named Super Bowl MVP.
As a wide receiver at Michigan (1988-1991), Howard was the first receiver in Big Ten history to lead the conference in scoring as he set or tied five NCAA records and 12 single-season Michigan records. In 1991, he won the Heisman Trophy, and finished the season with 950 receiving yards and 19 touchdown passes, making him the first wide receiver to lead the Big Ten in scoring with 138 points.
In 2011, Howard was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame. He has also been inducted to the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame, the University of Michigan Hall Of Honor, the State of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame.
