Western Kentucky Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Tyson Helton
Opening statement: “My hat’s off to Georgia State, they are a good football team and just flat-out outplayed us tonight. I thought there were a couple of things early in the game that we did a good job on, but penalties cost us at critical times and they did all the right things. They beat us hands down, they had a good night. We’ll go back to the drawing board.”
On Tyrrell Pigrome’s two second-quarter interceptions: “I don’t account either one of those interceptions as really his fault. I thought he was in the right spot, it was a tight throw and they were both down-the-field balls so he had to turn it loose and their DBs made good plays. They did a nice job in coverage so I didn’t fault him for where he went with the ball, they just made good plays on the ball.and they were going to be tight plays as it is.”
On Georgia State scoring 27 unanswered points: “It was obviously huge, it was the difference in the game. They were able to run the ball efficiently against our defense. I thought we had done a nice job for the most part against the run all year, but they were able to move the line of scrimmage. And when it was time for them to make plays down the field they made some great catches tonight, they did a really good job in that area. I thought we were in good coverage but their guys came down with the ball, hat’s off to them.”
On unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the game: “It was two teams who were motivated and battling and I thought emotions were high on both sides of the ball to be honest with you. Our emotions got the best of us once or twice, that’s what I was disappointed in. We stopped them on a critical third down and had a personal foul and they were able to capitalize on that and score. That was uncharacteristic of us and something that we addressed in the locker room at halftime and performed better from that standpoint. When you play a good football team like that, those kind of penalties are really going to cost you.”
On Georgia State’s defense: “They are just a good defense, they do a great job in the run game so we knew we were probably going to have to throw it a little more in this game. They have a good pass rush, I thought they got after the quarterback pretty good. They are just overall a good, solid defense and they did a nice job tonight.”
Senior DE DeAngelo Malone
On what Georgia State was doing offensively in the first half that made it hard to defend: “I felt like they did a good job [running] split zone plays. They executed well. We weren’t able to get stops and didn’t wrap up or cover well.”
On whether or not the long layoff had an effect on them today: “It really didn’t have an effect because we came out with the same mindset of just coming in and trying to win the game.”
Redshirt junior OL Cole Spencer
On Georgia State’s defense: “We knew this was going to be a good physical group. At the end of the day, it came down to us not executing some of the little things right. We had a couple of penalties that really hurt us in the first half.”
On what effect the long layoff had on them: “No. It was just penalties and not doing the little things right that really killed us. I wouldn’t say that the distance between games really impacted us too much.”
