Joe Theismann To Speak at GoDaddy Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon
Mobile, Ala. – (Nov. 7, 2014) Bowl officials announced today that former NFL quarterback and College Football Hall of Famer Joe Theismann will speak at the GoDaddy Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015.
Theismann was an All-American quarterback and Heisman trophy contender at Notre Dame. During his tenure with the Irish he compiled a 20-3-2 record while throwing for 4,411 yards and 31 touchdowns as a starter. In 1971, the Irish finished 10-1 on the season, including a Cotton Bowl victory against Texas.
Theismann’s professional debut was with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. He played for three seasons before signing with the Washington Redskins in 1974.
During his 12 seasons with the Washington Redskins, Thiemann set several franchise records including most career passing attempts with 3,602, most career passing completions with 2,044, and most career passing yards with 25,206.
In 1982 he led the Redskins to their first championship in 40 years against the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII and was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year. The following year, the Redskins won the NFC Championship and Theismann was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player. He was also named MVP in the second of his two Pro Bowl appearances.
Following his retirement from football, Theismann began a career as a sportscaster. He served as a color commentator on regional CBS NFL coverage in 1986 and 1987, and later on worked in ESPN’s Sunday Night Football telecasts from 1988 to 2005 and on Monday Night Football coverage in 2006. He also served as a color analyst on NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football. Theismann co-hosts the NFL network’s weekly show Playbook.
Theisman, a native of New Brunswick, N.J. has three children, Joe, Amy, and Patrick. He is married to Robin Theismann, and is the owner of Joe Theismann Restaurant in Alexandria, Va.
The GoDaddy Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon will be held Friday, Jan. 2 at noon, at the Mobile Convention Center. Individual tickets for this event are $30, and tables of ten are $300.
