Brett Favre To Speak At GoDaddy Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon

Mobile, ALA – (Oct. 12, 2013) Bowl officials announced today that former NFL quarterback Brett Favre will be the speaker for the GoDaddy Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon on Friday, January 3, 2014.

Favre, the Kiln, MS native, is one of the most esteemed professional football players to have played in the NFL, doing so for 20 seasons. During his 20-year NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, New York Jets, and the Minnesota Vikings, Favre was the first player in NFL history to win three consecutive AP NFL Most Valuable Player Awards.

Favre’s development started at an early age where he played both baseball and football at Hancock North Central High School. Under the tutelage of his father, Irvin, Favre played quarterback, lineman, strong safety, and held kicking duties, earning three varsity letters for football and five varsity letters for baseball. Favre’s no. 10 jersey was retired in 1993 and the football field was renamed in his honor in 2004.

He went on to play four years at the University of Southern Mississippi as quarterback. While at USM, Favre led his team to come-from-behind wins versus Tulane University and the University of Alabama, under then head coach, Gene Stallings. While in his junior season, he led the Golden Eagles to an upset victory against sixth-ranked Florida State.

He held numerous Golden Eagle records including the career individual record for most plays, most total yards gained, most passing yards gained, most completions made, and most passing attempts. For his efforts, Favre’s no. 4 jersey was retired in 1993. In 1997, Favre was inducted into the Southern Miss Sports Hall of Fame and was named to the Southern Mississippi Football Team of the Century in 2011.

His professional career has as many accomplishments and accolades as does his college career.

Favre was drafted in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft as the 33rd overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons. He played one season in Atlanta and was then traded to the Green Bay Packers where he spent the next 16 seasons as the starting quarterback.

While in Green Bay, Favre earned his three consecutive NFL MVP awards from the 1995-1997 seasons. He led the Packers to two Super Bowl appearances, beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI in New Orleans, in 1996. He also started every Green Bay game from Sept. 20, 1992 to Jan. 20, 2008.

In August 2008, after a brief retirement stint, Favre was traded to the New York Jets where he played one season. The Jets released Favre in April 2008 when Favre decided to enter back into retirement after 18 seasons. Favre then signed with the Minnesota Vikings in August 2009.

During the two seasons he spent as a Viking, Favre became the first quarterback in NFL history to defeat each of the NFL’s 32 franchises since the league was expanded in 2002. Favre led his team to the NFC Championship that year and for his efforts, was named to his 11th Pro Bowl selection.

Off the field, Favre and his wife Deanna, work with the Favre 4 Hope Foundation that provides support and services to underprivileged children in Mississippi and Wisconsin. The Favre 4 Hope Foundation is a combined effort of the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation and the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation. In 2005, the Foundation began extending services to organizations providing support for breast cancer patients.

Favre has two daughters, Brittany and Breleigh, and one grandson, Parker Brett. He currently resides in Hattiesburg, MS.

The GoDaddy Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon will be held on Friday, January 3rd at noon, at the Mobile Convention Center. Tickets for this event are $30. Tables of ten are $300.
