Winners Announced at Hoar Program Management/ Godaddy.com Bowl Learning Through Reading Program
MOBILE, Ala. (Dec. 10, 2012) – The award ceremony for the twelfth annual HOAR Program Management/GoDaddy.com Bowl Reading and Writing Program, which is meant to stimulate students’ reading and writing skills, took place this morning at the Mobile Civic Center Theater.
The seven-week contest which ended in October was open to all fifth graders in the state of Alabama as well as the Gulf Coast regions of Florida and Mississippi.
Finalists submitted a written book report in 250 words or less. A panel of judges selected 10 finalists to compete for first place.
Over 2000 fourth grade students attended this year’s awards ceremony. Other guests in attendance included Mobile Mayor Sam Jones, Blue Angels Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron and a Distinguished Young Woman.
The 10 finalists who entered the contest were sent Cynthia Lord’s book entitled Rules to read and write a report to determine the winning place order. The winners were awarded savings bonds in amounts ranging from $10,000 to $500. They are also invited to attend the events taking place during GoDaddy.com Bowl Week, including the GoDaddy.com Bowl Mayor’s Luncheon, the Greers- AL.com/ Press- Register Mardi Gras Parade and the GoDaddy.com Bowl game.
This year’s $500 winners included Libby Morgan, Leon Sheffield Elementary – Decatur, AL; Tamela Stallworth, Nan Gray Davis Elementary – Mobile, AL, Taylor Dodge, St. Elmo Elementary – Irvington, AL; Kevin Chapman Dawes Elementary – Mobile, AL.
The $1,000 winners were Ondre Turner, St. Elmo Elementary- St. Elmo, AL; Kylie McClain, Austin Elementary- Mobile, AL; Valentina Hermida, Fonde Elementary- Mobile, AL.
The top three finalists included $1,500 winner Reed Swope of Edgewood Elementary- Birmingham, Alabama; $3,000 winner Joella Fraser, Washington County- Chatom, Alabama; and $10,000 winner Sarah Bryan, Shelton Heritage Elementary- Madison, Alabama.
Over the past eleven years, the HOAR Program Management/GoDaddy.com Bowl Reading and Writing Program has donated over $220,000 in savings bonds to students in the fifth grade.
The GoDaddy.com Bowl will be played on January 6, 2013, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
